So. I've decided that I'm going to give going back to school a shot. The only problem with that is being able to pay for it. Granted, it's a community college so it's relatively cheap, but I imagine my FAFSA will not cover everything.
In the spirit of finding financial backing, I have been applying for scholarships. Most of them have been pretty straight forward, what's your major and why - type of stuff. Granted, that's a seemingly impossible question because I don't KNOW what I want to do when I "grow up" but I've managed to decently BS my way through some stuff.
Internet search engines are great. I have found some truly strange places to apply for scholarships through.
One of them is a coffee distribution website. The task was to explain the importance of education from my perspective, and somehow include the topic of coffee in the essay. It wasn't until I had already written the required 500 words and was looking how to submit it that I realized the deadline was already passed. It was a contest for last semester. So, all of that hard work for nothing.
I figured I would share it here though, since I did write it in Dear: format anyway So here it is:
Dear Coffee:
I need you to help me. I have a new mission in mind: Go back to school. You were there for me the first time around. You were there for me through all of the late nights and the last second cram sessions. I need you to be there for me again.
Together, you and I shall conquer the world. We will buy books, pay for classes, pay for pens and notebooks, and multicolored highlighters to keep our thoughts organized. You will keep me focused, keep me on task. The focus and drive you give me will help me sail through my course load and allow me greater opportunities in life. Not only will it benefit myself, but it will also benefit my son.
We need to show him some things, help guide him through this crazy life. He loves to learn already, but I desire more than that for him. I want him to see that through education, anything is possible. Education allows you to be knowledgeable on various topics, make informed decisions, learn about the world around you. It helps you to be a better communicator, a better teacher to others. Learning connects everything in life. From a young age we are taught various subjects that are all interconnected, even if we don't realize it then. Through education we can see the world. We can be transported to other places and times and meet a variety of people, both in the real world and through our imaginations in our reading.
With education, the possibilities are endless. I have a coffee mug with a quote from Gandhi on the side of it: Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.
I want that quote to ring true in our lives. Education is the only thing that we can truly take with us through our whole lives, no matter where we go. The things we learn, the experiences we get to collect because of it are invaluable. It is important to me to be the role model of that ideal to my son.
I need you though, coffee. Working a full time job and being a full time mom means lots of sleepless nights. There will be a lot of days where I need a hot cup of liquid heaven in the morning to keep me going throughout the day. I'm sure that by noon I'll need a nice tall cup of iced coffee to give me a little boost to get me through the rest of the work day, get me through being home for a while, and then hitting the books and class at night.
I know that it will pay off. Hard work and tired eyes but a body full of energy will keep us going long enough to get through it all. We've worked so hard to come to this point, and with your assistance, there will be no slowing down now.
With much appreciation,
C.G.
